Witnessing on the job June 6, 2006

This morning I once again experienced the reason I love my calling so much. I had a service member walk into my office because he was at the end of his ability to deal with his life’s problems. He came in to talk to the Chaplain for family issues, but by the time he left an hour later, we had talked about real heart issues. He realized that he needed something else, something real, in his life. I was able to share that the void he had in his life would only be able to be filled by Jesus Christ and a relationship with God throught the salvation offered by Christ’s death.

While this is the greatest part of my job, I always am amazed that the Lord would use me to spread the gospel. It also amazes me that He has allowed me to be in a ministry where unbelievers walk into my office and ask my advice on life’s problems. My advice is worthless. It is the Holy Spirit speaking to the heart of the person that can truly change a life. These God ordained encounters force me back to prayer that I all too often am very lax in. God has taught – is still teaching – me that any time we try to evangelize in our own strength, we fail. It is only when we totally trust God for the words, scripture, and opportunities that we see any fruit from our efforts. Ultimately, all we can do is take every opportunity for witness that appears before us and leave the results up to God. That is exactly what First Corinthians 3:7 says, “So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.” (NIV)

So what has God reminded me of today? Rely totally on Him, and take every opportunity to turn people’s eyes and hearts towards Christ.
